A colorectal surgeon is a doctor who performs surgery on the colon, the rectum or the anus, and can also be called a colon and rectal surgeon or a proctologist. There are many reasons a colorectal surgeon would perform surgery to a patient.

Sometimes, there is a need to repair openings or fissures from the vagina to the rectum. In other cases, this surgery would be performed in order to remove cancerous growths in the colon called polyps. In this scenario, surgery would be considered a requirement in order to save the life or improve the health of a patient battling colon cancer.

In other conditions such as diverticulitis, which affects the lower bowel, a colorectal surgeon may perform a colostomy or a bowel resection. Sometimes, hemorrhoids also need to be surgically removed by a colorectal surgeon. In other cases, this doctor will be treating patients with Crohn's disease, which is an autonomic disorder affecting the lower section of the gastrointestinal tract.

PPH is a technique developed in the early 90's that reduces the prolapse of hemorrhoidal tissue by excising a band of the prolapsed anal mucosa membrane with the use of a circular stapling device.

In PPH, the prolapsed tissue is pulled into a device that allows the excess tissue to be removed while the remaining hemorrhoidal tissue is stapled. This restores the hemorrhoidal tissue back to its original anatomical position.
